Alan Shoemaker is one of those meteorologists whose likability is through the roof. He’s warm and he understands his audience and what they want from the weather. I also love that he still really is amazed by the weather and the rollercoaster ride it can deliver at any given time. He gets it! He loves it! It’s his passion!
Alan has had a passion for weather ever since elementary school. Born in Frederick, Maryland, he lived in Frederick while he was in elementary school before moving to Mt. Airy, MD. He still has family in Maryland and neighboring Pennsylvania. He has a great love for the DC/Baltimore area, but has enjoyed getting to know other areas of the country and forecasting for very different regions.
He graduated from Mississippi State University (on campus) with a Bachelor of Science degree in Geosciences, with an emphasis in Broadcast Meteorology. While in college, Alan interned at WUSA in the summer of 1995. He says that experience gave him the opportunity to spread his meteorological wings.
He made his television debut his junior year of college for WTVA-TV in Tupelo, Mississippi, where he was the weekend weather anchor. His “on campus” experience combined with working the weekends, created the environment to take the principals of the classroom and apply them to on-the-spot forecasting. It was a great opportunity to educate beyond the classroom.
Since college, he has been building his television career. He co-founded and managed the storm chasing touring company, “Tornado Express Tours,” from 2003-2007. They made daily forecasts for severe weather and operated tours in the field. This was challenging and exciting and, something that few meteorologists get the chance to do.
Currently Alan is the weekend and weekday noon meteorologist for KRGV-TV in Weslaco, Texas, which has given him the valuable experience of tropical weather forecasting. While forecasting at KRGV he spent 37 continuous hours covering Hurricane Dolly in 2008. In 2010, he created the station’s Facebook page and has been a leader in developing other digital and social media for the television station.
Alan is a huge Baltimore Orioles fan. So huge, in fact, he attended the very first game in Camden Yards in 1992.
In his spare time, you’ll find him enjoying just about anything outdoors. From biking, running, swimming, playing softball, and tennis – he loves it all. He told us that he just renewed his passport and is hoping to see more of the world in 2015. And he’s just started training himself in DSLR photography.
